      <image:caption>One of the projects I completed at JMKAC (John Michael Kohler Art Center) was called Diary Cup Project. While I was working in their pottery factory, I made a mold of a cup. The cup signifies our ordinal day, same shape, same material, and same blankness just like our days. But I think what makes each cup/day special is not what it's made of, how we see it and celebrate it. Everyday, I painted one cup at the end of the day (sometimes the next day) with everything that happened on that day to commemorate the residency. Each cup became special with events, places, conversations, weather, foods, work, projects, difficulties, joy, and people. Every moment in this residency was so extraordinary and I wanted to share this great experience with everyone. It is my hope that people can see how the residency is from one artist's point of view. This whole set that consists 74 cups to commemorate my residency from the first to the last day is now in JMKAC's permanent collection. The photo doesn't have them all, because the shooting happened before the end of residency (and of course the shooting itself is depicted on one cup of that day). I hope you will have a chance to see the whole set, to really see my experience at the residency. Photo courtesy of John Michael Kohler Arts Center</image:caption>

      <image:caption>This cup was a day 2/3 in my residency. Staffs and residents went to a local bar and we enjoyed the beer sample. While we were talking about local events, I learned about the wurst eating contest and their fascinating rewards. The winner will receive a year supply of wursts! I really wanted to enter the contest, but couldn't make it to the deadline. This was also a weekend day, so the magical slip pouring tube was not on. To fill up the giant mold I was working on, I had to manually pour clay slip into the mold, which requires about 17 buckets. Then the casting failed because my bucketing was taking way too long and creating the uneven thickness. Ahhh, it was a really good upper-arm exercise. <image:caption>The other project I was working on during the residency was called Pillar Project. Initially it was supposed to be a set of exchangeable units that depict similar myth and folktales from different cultures, as a part of my "Genuine Fake China" series. The challenge was that I didn't have any experience in slip casting technique and not capable of creating sufficient structures. It took me two months to make the originals and casting molds. The pillars were supposed to be taller as well, but for the safety reason, the ones in the photos were the maximum height. This was a great learning experience and I am so grateful that JMKAC gave me this wonderful opportunity. The coordinator and the studio technician were patience and kind, this couldn't happen without their guidance and support. The finished pillars depicts harpies and a mermaid, which show up in both Western and Eastern myths, though tier roles are completely reversed. <image:caption>My residency was from June 15th to August 30th, 2014. That was the best season in Wisconsin, the sky was blue, air was dry, so many fun events in every weekend. The factory was hot and humid for the molds, but I would rather like working in the heat than cold. It was an amazing experience and I learned so much, I would recommend everyone. The people at Kohler were very generous, supportive and open-minded as well, you will have a great time. If there is anyone interested in applying for the residency or just learning more about the program, I can help you out. I would love to go back for the second time, when I come up with great ideas! A pair yunomi signifies the harmony and unification, a sign of happy marriage life. When my parents' 43th anniversary came up, I designed this as a joke (of course I won't show this to them). Despite their long, happy marriage as a result of romance, my parents have been bickering on each other every day. The subjects varies from day to day, but the continuous theme is that "Why you?" for the last 43 years. This made me think about their marriage, not just the surface layer to show to the society, but the deep, private acceptance and resignation. The crane is a symbol of happiness, marriage, and longevity in Asia, and their monogamy has been praised and used to teach young couples as a perfect way to go. But I wonder if what we see in the behavior of a married couple to us is what they feel, there must be so much more that only they share. Now I have been happily married for eight years, there so much more for me to learn, observe, and accept. This theme of love and marriage is a great inspiration to me, and this set is one of the pieces that bring me a satisfaction. Thank god that my parents don't understand English or owning Internet (by choice, they used to have it until one day it became the theme of their argument).</image:caption>

      <image:title>gallery - Hanafuda Sake drinking game set</image:title>
      <image:caption>Mid-range porcelain, Wheel-thrown, Sgraffito, carving, underglaze and glaze painting, gold luster How to play The Hanafuda Sake drinking game set is a functional game device. Historically there are many sake-drinking games in Japan: this is a modified version of a performance game with special dice that I designed.   This game can be played with several people or two (perfect for your second date). First, you roll the dice and see what you get. The dice indicates six ideograms as below:   “小“(“small”) with purple Hagi flowers “中” (“medium”) with Japanese maple leaves “大” (“large”) with chrysanthemum flowers “歌” (“sing”) with an Uguisu bird on plum branch, you have to sing a song “舞” (“dance”) with butterflies and peony flower, you have to perform a dance “脱” (“strip”) with cherry blossom, you have to strip one article of clothing Once you get the instruction on the dice (there is English for each Japanese ideogram on the saucer), find your cup on the saucer, finish the sake, and perform the task if you get one. For example, if you get “strip”, don’t just take off your socks – a Burlesque style striptease would be fun, while other players cheer. Once you complete the task, the next player rolls the dice.</image:caption>

      <image:title>gallery - Moon Cycle</image:title>
      <image:caption>Mid-range porcelain, underglaze painting There are folklores and fairytales revolving around dreams. Dreams are a universal phenomenon and private to people; they have been a common, yet mysterious, entity for everyone and are sometimes perceived as a revelation or annunciation. Sometimes people took actions based on their dreams and changed history.   My Japanese grandmother told me to never tell a good dream to people. On the other hand, if it’s a bad dream, I should tell immediately to release it. Whether it was good or bad, bottling a dream in my soul would give it a power to manifest, the power would force the oracle to come true. Luckily I am not so superstitious as to worry about the nightmare coming true (since none of the good ones seem to either), but it fascinates me as an artist to explore the ideas around dreams.   Creating artwork with the theme of dreams had been on my list for a long time. The challenging part was that I was not sure what kind of function to enhance the theme. The ceramic pillow has been a functional item for the upper-middle and noble class in Eastern Asian countries for centuries. Unlike the Western equivalents with soft feathers to support the entire head, Asian nobles preferred to use a small, tall, hard pillow to support their necks in order to keep their elaborated hairstyles intact. They believed the ceramic surface helps to keep you cool and improve the quality of sleep in summer. Many ceramic pillows were considered as luxurious artwork rather than a practical item, a symbol of taste and class.   I started creating these pillows a few months ago; it has been like accumulating dreams. Like dreams, there is much to learn and explore in them. I hope my work to manifest to something powerful.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Mid-range porcelain, Sgraffito “White rabbit of Inaba” Once upon a time, there was a white rabbit, who lived on a small island. He wanted to test his chances in a bigger place but the ocean between his island and the land of Inaba was known for the many vicious sharks. So the rabbit decided to trick the sharks. He told them that he would count their numbers if they lined up in the ocean from the island to Inaba. The rabbit started hopping on sharks, counting up loudly, and heading toward his dreamland. But a few steps before arriving at the land, arrogance got the best of rabbit; he yelled out his plan and mocked the sharks. The rabbit thought he could jump to the land, but the sharks got him as he touched the shore. It is interesting to me that both the West and East give sharks so much credit.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>2014, Mid-range porcelain, carving and Sgraffito, gold luster All the Japanese kids get annoyed to learn that rabbits have to be counted as a bird in the Japanese literature classes. In those classes, kids were told that every animal has to be counted as "1 animal, 2 animal, 3 animal"(no singular/plural in Japanese), and every bird has to be counted as "1 bird, 2 bird, 3 bird". Except rabbits, which were counted as "1 bird". No teacher offered the explanation. After I became relatively old, I found the reason rabbits were "counted" as a bird. The custom was born in the medieval time in Japan, while the majority of the population actively practiced Buddhism. In the version of Buddhism the Japanese practiced banned eating of four legged animals (such as cows), while allowed people to eat two legged animals, such as birds. Naturally, people decided "Hey, the bunny ears are so big, just like bird wings, let's call them a bird!" to satisfy their animal protein needs. Necessity is a mother of invention, indeed. When I told my husband this story, he told me back yet another bunny abuse story in religion. In the medieval time (must be the time of creative solutions), catholic monks were bummed out for not able to eat animal meat during the certain ritual practice time. They were allowed to eat fish during the time, but it must have been awful, because they came up with the idea of "hey, look at those baby bunnies! They are so small and white, they must actually be a fish!" I don't know whether this story is accurate or not, but it is strange to see that two completely separate, major religions decided to abuse rabbit identity. There must be something about bunny to trigger the abuse. Additionally, a church in New Orleans made a national news a few years ago by categorizing alligator meats as fish during the lent.</image:caption>

      <image:title>My backyard garden clay - Adventures With Wild Clays</image:title>
      <image:caption>Since 2021, I’ve been working with local clay—especially from my own backyard garden. When I first moved to Pennsylvania, I was frustrated by how difficult gardening was due to the massive amount of clay in the soil. But then it hit me: I was literally sitting on top of free art-making material! My first attempt was a great success. My mentor, Sheila Barnum at Rowantree Pottery, would have been proud—her studio once used local clay sourced from a nearby elementary school when they expanded the schoolyard in Blue Hill, Maine. I want to encourage others to test their local clay to see if it’s workable, to explore its possibilities, and to have fun with what they discover. It’s a way to feel more connected to the earth—to realize that clay truly comes from the ground beneath us—and to appreciate our ancestors and their wisdom. Every time I open a metal can after a pit fire, I feel a sense of awe, just as my ancestors must have felt with each firing, long before kilns existed. You can find out today whether you’re living on top of workable clay—just follow a few simple steps! I hope this inspires you to explore the natural materials around us, to see how simple ceramic-making can be, and to enjoy the process as a playful science experiment. Just be sure to check your local fire regulations first. Be safe, and have fun!</image:caption>

      <image:title>My backyard garden clay - Squeeze Test: Is this clay or something else?</image:title>
      <image:caption>If you're not sure whether what you've found is clay, try testing it by squeezing it in your hand. If it's clay, it should retain its shape and show the pattern of your squeeze (see picture). If it's sand, it will fall apart. You can also test it by mushing it between your fingertips—clay should feel slightly tacky.</image:caption>

      <image:title>My backyard garden clay - Quick process of harvesting clay:</image:title>

      <image:title>My backyard garden clay</image:title>
      <image:caption>4. Pour clay slip into a plaster mold and let it dry. If you don’t have a mold bowl, you can use a glazed ceramic bowl instead. It will take longer for the clay to dry, but it will eventually.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/52cc34aee4b0e481c5fb2600/1757214317088-AS56W6QWI5SX3R6P8G5J/IMG_2637.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>My backyard garden clay</image:title>
      <image:caption>5. When the clay starts drying out, keep mixing it in the bowl to make sure the batch will be consistent by scraping the drying edge and mixing into the wet center.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/52cc34aee4b0e481c5fb2600/1757214627020-XOMDBAWVKJI9D9Y1XAGA/IMG_2637.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>My backyard garden clay</image:title>
      <image:caption>6. Important — Resting Period Once the clay reaches a workable stage, it needs a resting period to allow the water to bind the particles and help them realign. Form the clay into a smooth, round ball, wrap it tightly in a plastic bag or sheet, and let it rest for at least one day—ideally, for several days. If possible, a three-month resting period will yield the best results. Even if your local clay hasn’t felt particularly plastic up to this point, this resting period may give it a chance to develop better plasticity.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/52cc34aee4b0e481c5fb2600/1757214997899-QWI73JICDDCM324OHRQN/IMG_5747.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>My backyard garden clay</image:title>
      <image:caption>7. Wedge the Clay Thoroughly Before Creating Forms. Wedging helps achieve a consistent texture and removes air pockets, making the clay easier to work with. Shapes That Are More Prone to Breaking: •Long, skinny rope-like shapes •Flat, thin sheets •Small, narrow, protruding parts •Parts that are poorly attached •Solid, thick sections (more than 1 inch in diameter) Remember: Your piece will go through the fire—so build with durability in mind! For smaller, delicate pieces, you may want to put them in a metal can with convertibles to protect them from fire logs.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/52cc34aee4b0e481c5fb2600/1757215203361-8SOOOE2ER996V3WTIOXR/IMG_2704.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>My backyard garden clay</image:title>
      <image:caption>Disclaimer / Safety Warning Fire regulations vary depending on where you live, and outdoor firing may be strictly restricted for safety reasons. Always check with your local fire marshal or relevant authorities to obtain proper permission. It's also a good idea to inform your neighbors in advance to avoid misunderstandings or unwanted calls to emergency services. Ensuring safety and compliance is your responsibility. Materials and tools for this project •Burnished pots (no bisque fire), bone dry •Stone, metal spoon or a piece of plastic to burnish clay (hand lotion is optional) •Metal trash can with a lid, or a pit with some metal sheet to cover •Newspapers •Sawdust •Straw •Twigs, logs, and other combustible materials •A bucket of water for safety •Polishing agents - Furniture polish, floor wax, bee wax, olive oil, etc.</image:caption>

      <image:title>My backyard garden clay</image:title>
      <image:caption>3. Cover the bin and begin the reduction process. Cover the trash bin to trap smoke and allow the pots to absorb it as they slowly cool down. This is known as the reduction process. Be sure to maintain a slow and steady cooling period—if the pots cool too quickly, they may crack or explode due to thermal shock.</image:caption>

      <image:title>My backyard garden clay</image:title>
      <image:caption>4. Remove the pots once fully cooled. Wait until the metal container is completely cool—usually overnight—before removing the pots. Handling them too early can cause damage or injury.</image:caption>

It was an incredible experience, and I highly recommend this residency program to any creative minds. They offer a variety of specialized spaces, including studios for music, dance, weaving, and more. https://www.hambidge.org/</image:caption>

      <image:caption>While I was there, I was captivated by the local red clay with mica—its rich colors and the unique blend of coarse sand and smooth texture were mesmerizing. Some artists mentioned that the clay lacked plasticity, so I collected samples from several spots around the property to compare their qualities. One sample, taken from the Anagama kiln yard, seemed workable enough for my communal experimentation.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Hambidge residency project 2025</image:title>
      <image:caption>My plan was to invite my fellow resident artists to create small clay objects using the Hambidge clay. This would allow me to observe how workable the clay body was, and give them a chance to take home something genuinely Hambidge as a keepsake. After a communal dinner, everyone gathered together and joyfully muddied their hands with the clay! That was the spirit of collaboration and experimentation.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Hambidge residency project 2025</image:title>
      <image:caption>I was lucky that they have a very safe firing environment with a metal fire ring with lid. All the pieces were buried under dry leaves and pine needles, then logs were placed on top to make fire.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>This piece was created by fellow resident artist Zoe, using Hambidge clay and mica she personally collected from Betty’s Creek on the property. Thank you, Zoe—not only for embracing the challenge with such enthusiasm, but for showing us how your creativity instinctively seizes every opportunity. You have a remarkable gift for transforming what’s within reach into something meaningful and new. Your open-mindedness reminds me how vital it is to stay curious, uplifted, and receptive to fresh ideas. For me, this is a powerful reminder to keep both my mind and arms open to new possibilities as a creator. You are truly a role model, Zoe! Photo credit: Zoe Cohen</image:caption>

      <image:title>Hambidge residency project 2025</image:title>
      <image:caption>The second round of experimentation brought together a slightly different group, including composers, videographers, and writers. We had a wonderful time crafting clay pieces together—laughing, wrestling with the material, and sharing conversations that wandered across many topics. Some sipped wine, others enjoyed Kombucha, and the evening unfolded with creativity and connection.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Hambidge residency project 2025</image:title>
      <image:caption>Overall, the project was a success—both in testing Hambidge clay for my future work and in creating a communal experience with fellow resident artists. For me, it was another opportunity to inspire people to reconnect with the earth and our shared history through clay, and to reflect on the creative possibilities woven into everyday life. I hope to continue this local clay project with as many people as possible, inviting them to discover the incredible material right beneath our feet and to experience the joy of making art with our own hands, together.</image:caption>
